This section offers links to reviews and recommendations for some of the best parenting books and books on modern motherhood.
What's my criteria for something to qualify as a great parenting book?
I like books that provide refreshing perspectives on modern parenting culture and motherhood. I like books that give us insight, and that help us to understand the hows and whys of modern parenting.
The best parenting books are those that help us feel more confident, that give us insight into the real world of modern parenting, and of course are also a pleasure to read!
For example, I'm a huge fan of the
'momoir'
genre -- narratives of motherhood written by mothers about their own motherhood experiences and perspectives. I learn more from these books than I do from all the baby books combined.
I'm also keen to recommend
books on parenting culture
. Sometimes these book are written by journalists, sometimes by academics. Either way, the best ones totally put parenting into a fresh new perspective and provide huge insight into why we seem to do things the way we do. They also allow space for intelligent and thoughtful critiques on modern parenting -- great for making us less worried about whether we're 'doing everything right' or not.
Of course,
parenting humor
is also always enjoyable. There are lots of great choices in this category of parenting book -- just click on the links below to see some of my favorite titles!
