Many of the articles about motherhood and parenting culture you will find in this section of the Motherhood Cafe are written by me.
I do however, also have links to some of my favorite articles written by others.
You will notice from reading these articles -- and visiting other websites I like (find these links below) -- that I have a certain point of view on modern motherhood and parenting culture.
Here is an introduction to some of my opinions:
I believe modern parenting is way too expert-dependent -- we've become too dependent on experts to guide us in our parenting ways, and to dictate to us what 'good parenting' is supposed to look like. We've also become too dependent on the language of science and medicine in parenting.
We're overly child-centered in our views. In so doing, we've come to equate 'good mothering' with highly self-sacrificing styles of parenting; methods that are overly -- and unnecessarily -- labor-intensive, emotionally-intensive, time-consuming and expensive.
We've become too risk-averse in our parenting mindsets. Because we are constantly being told to watch out for more and more risks, we are being turned into a generation of paranoid parents.
But when we do fear risk, and when we do develop a parenting mindset that seeks to avoid risk -- just as we're told to do -- then we get accused of over-parenting, of inappropriately helicoptering over our kids, micromanaging their lives and stunting their independence. It's a double-edged sword.
These are some of the points you will see developed in the articles about parenting and motherhood featured in this section of the Motherhood Cafe.
